Ten Songs Podcast #21

The second to last podcast! Wow. In this show:
1. A guest set from Ian at killyourown.co.uk. Kill Your Own is kinda like the British version of If You Make It. Ian’s collated lots of rad UK DIY punk and hardcore records for you to download for free (there’s the option to make a donation). It’s a great resource and he was kind enough to put together some tracks for this show. Check it out at killyourown.co.uk.
2. I bought no new records this month, which is deeply weird and probably the first time in a great many years. So there’s two sets of classic punk and hardcore tunes, inspired mostly by the dinner party I had where I drank a few beers and slipped in to DJ mode and savaged the record collection. As part of this, there’s an entire set of Mike Kirsch-related stuff, most of bands I’d forgotten somehow (I’m not sure how exactly), and all of which, to me at least, sounds pretty essential.
Next show will be the last one for a while as I’m off to Australia. I’m going to be putting together a request set. It would be great if you got involved. If there’s something you want to hear, drop me an email at tensongspodcast [at] googlemail [dot] com and we’ll talk business.

Fifteen Myspace)
3. The Marked Men– Broken Record (From the “On The Outside” CD on
Dirtnap Records)
4. Radon – Two Feet (From the ”28” CD on
No Idea Records)
5. Bent Outta Shape – I Don’t Know (From the “Stray Dog Town” CD on
Recess Records)

Mike Kirsch theme set

Ebullition Records and Broken Rekids)
7. Bread & Circuits –Statute of Limitations (From the “S/T” CD on
Ebullition Records)
8. Pinhead Gunpowder – Future Daydream (From the “Kick Over The Traces” CD on
Recess Records)
9. Torches To Rome – Numbered Days (From the “S/T” CD on
Ebullition Records)

Guest set –Ian from Kill Your Own
10. This Business Is Closed – For Our Sins (Download from

11. The Final Five - I Wanna Frak You Starbuck (Download from
Kill Your Own)
12. James Hull - Davey and the Slick Cigarettes (Download from
Kill Your Own)
13. Men - Re Your Re-Branding (Download from
Kill Your Own)

14. Screeching Weasel – My Brain Hurts (From the “My Brain Hurts” album on
Recess/Asian Man)

Notes:
1. This was put together on my family's PC using Audacity and a USB record player, some over played CDs and 7"s and a cheap Internet microphone. Plus this MP3 is a lower bit rate than most in order to keep it at a manageable size. So if there’s a song on here that you dig and want to buy the record it came off, don't be put off if it sounds kinda rough or scuzzy. I can guarantee it'll sound better in the original format.
2. I asked the labels (Recess, Ebullition, Dirtnap, No Idea) or the bloggers (Kill Your Own) if it was OK to podcast their songs and they were cool with it. I think one of the great things about the internet is that it’s really easy to get in contact with people whose music you dig and I'd like to take time to thank them for allowing me to play their songs. Cheers! Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a way to contact Spam records and Fifteen didn’t answer my myspace message. Since it’s an amazing song, I thought I’d share it anyhow but if anyone involved in the band/label is unhappy about this, please drop me an email and we’ll sort something out.
3. It goes without saying that if you like this podcast, let your friends know about it! Please? Thank you. And get in touch too if you dig it/hate it/have any tips. tensongspodcast [at] googlemail [dot] com or leave a comment. And if you think you might want to have a go at making your own podcast, here’s a step by step guide to How I Made This Show.

How To Listen To The Show:
I've uploaded the podcast to bliptv. I'm a little confused by RSS feeds and all that bumph, but I think that they sort all this for me. This means that it should be pretty easy to subscribe to the podcast. As I understand it, you need to cut and paste this url into your podcast catcher - http://tensongspodcast.blip.tv/rss - or if you use itunes, hopefully you'll be able to do the same thing if you CLICK HERE.

Uploading to blip.tv also means that you can use the player below to stream the podcast and listen to it without downloading it. Plus if you RIGHT CLICK HERE and select "save target as" you should have the option of downloading the podcast and listening to it on the sly at work or something. Get in. (If you left click, it streams the audio too, but it jumps to another page and takes forever.)

Ten Songs Podcast #20

Another month, another late show. This is starting to feel like doing a fanzine ha ha. Anyhow, this month, I’ve got a guest podcaster helping me out – Toby from A Load Of Stuff That Happened blog was kind enough to record a guest set for me. A Lot Of Stuff That Happened is a collection of live videos and mp3s from shows Toby attended and his section of this podcast includes four of his favourite recordings. You should check it out. It’s pretty great.

As well as that, there’s the usual punk/hardcore/garage tracks from me.

I’m going to Oz in November for up to a year. That means unfortunately, this will be one of the last podcasts I’ll be doing for a while. I’m not sure I’ll be able to keep this going on the other side of the world. We’ll see. In the final show in November, I’m hoping to do a request set – Ten Songs Podcast has always been about helping to build community and I’d like to get as many people involved in this as possible before I lay it to rest for a bit. Email me at tensongspodcast [at] googlemail [dot] com if you’ve got a track you want to share and we’ll talk business.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a way to contact Discount or Crimpshrine, and both Kat and Lookout seem to be defunct, though the Lookout records website seemed to be showing a few signs of life. Since they’re amazing bands and great songs, I thought I’d share them anyhow but if anyone involved in either of these bands/labels is unhappy about this, please drop me an email and we’ll sort something out.

Ten Songs Podcast #19

Ok! It’s August already. Time for a new show. This one features a guest set from my friends Ian and Debbie. We organised this over email, with them both sending me two songs each. It came out really well – not only is there a rad set of melodic punk, they’ve also picked a bunch of great bands I’d otherwise probably have never heard and I’m always stoked when people want to help out with the show.

There’s another live set this month. This time out, it’s Chris Clavin, recorded playing live in Puerto Rico. If you haven’t heard Chris before, his solo stuff is clever, well played acoustic punk. This set forms a nice contrast to the set I played last month featuring some of the bands he’s played in like Devil Is Electric, Jammy Dodgers, Imperial Can and Operation Cliff Clavin. I think the recording totally captures the feeling of the show well, and I’m totally stoked I got to include this in the show.

Finally, I’ve been playing lots of old hardcore this month for some reason, so there’s a set from me of classic hardcore tunes that I’ve recently rediscovered and been reminiscing over.

Enjoy. Thanks for listening, and thanks to Ian, Debbie and Chris for making this show happen.
- Phil Chokeword

3. Tear It Up – What’s The Problem? (From the “First 4 Months” CD on

5. Dead Stool Pidgen – Strike Anthem (From the “Strike Anthem” CD on

8. Andrew Jackson Jihad – Little prince (From the split LP with Ghost Mice on

15. ONSIND – Suicide Is Painful (From the “Dissatisfaction” tape on
Something Honest To Dance To – CD on Discount Horse & Plan-It-X Records)

Notes:

I think one of the great things about the Internet is that it’s really easy to get in contact with people whose music you dig and I'd like to take time to thank them for allowing me to play their songs. Cheers! Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a way to contact the Nervous Dogs and Maakuntaradio never read the myspace message I sent. I wasn’t really sure what to do, but in the end, I included the songs because I thought that it would be a good thing to help promote both bands and hopefully help expose them to new people. I hope that was the right thing to do – if anyone from either band reads this and has a problem with me including the songs, please email me and we’ll sort things out.

Ten Songs Podcast #18

Hello.
1. I’ve had no internet connection from Sunday until tonight. Ok this show was going to be late anyhow but now it’s later still. Sorry.
2. There’s a live set from Whole In The Head. WITH play crusty thrashy hardcore. It’s pretty raging. Bit like Dropdead. Maybe. Cheers to them and Rich Smith for making it happen, I’m stoked on how this set came out.
3. There’s also a set of lo-fi pop punk bands that all feature Chris Plan-It-X/Ghost Mice/etc. This is because I’ve become hooked on the Imperial Can record he plays on and it’s made me dig out a bunch of other bands he was in because they are great too. Win.
4. I need a nap.

Thanks for listening - Phil Chokeword

Tuesday 1 June 2010

Hello

I've decided to take a month off. Sorry - been too busy organising other things to put June's show together and promote it properly.

But there will be a new show July 1st for sure, with a totally raging live set from Whole In The Head. Its fucking ace (I know because I just finished listening to it).

In the meantime, check out some of the shows linked on the blog or listen to some older casts.

Cheers.

Ten Songs Podcast #17

Things you should know this month:
1. This show features an awesome live set from Failures Union. When Rich gave me it, I was blown away and immediately thought it was good enough to be a “proper” record. If you haven’t heard of Failures Union, they toured the UK not so long ago, feature current and ex-members of The Exit Strategy, and The Grail and Lemuria, and play totally sweet mid-90’s style US indie/alt rock that I’m sure you’ll really dig.
2. I didn’t buy any hardcore records this month so this shows just full of great catchy punk rock. Oh well, that’s no hardship is it?
3. I’m completely stoked on how this show turned out.

Thanks as always to Rich Smith for making the live recording happen and to Failures Union for letting us record them. Happy May Day! – Phil Chokeword

Track Listing
1. The Copyrights – I’d Rather Die Or Something (From the split 7” with The Brokedowns on

3. Rooftops – Makers Mark (From the self titled, self released CD –
Rooftops myspace)

You Make It)

Ten Songs Podcast #16

So this month’s been a bit mental again. Oh well, better to be busy than not, which is why this show is almost late... that and audacity crashing and me losing everything. Anyhow, this time out, there’s a live set from Sauna Youth, who are one of my favourite UK bands at the moment. They play rad garage punk with a sweet poppy vibe and neat reverby sounds. I defy you not to nod along. As well as this, there’s a couple of tracks taken from the Pink Couch Session section of the If You Make It website. If you’re not familiar with If You Make It, it’s a great online community where you can download cool tunes and other DIY stuff for free. You should really check it out if you haven’t already at www.ifyoumakeit.com.

Thanks as always to Rich Smith for making the live recording happen and to Sauna Youth for letting us record them. Good times, these. – Phil Chokeword

Ten Songs Podcast #15

February was a manic month. I am ill and broken and poor. But it was all worth it. I made it back to Berlin and hung out with some great people, ate some great food, and saw the sights. I saw some awesome bands this month like Vitamin X, Billy Bragg, Brothers and Sauna Youth (all in the last 7 days actually...). And I picked up a stack of sweet records. Good times, these.

Anyhow, this is March’s show and there’s the usual mix of punk and hardcore. There’s also another live set – this time of my band Like Grenades. Thanks to Rich Smith as always for making that happen and for his support in keeping this part of the show going. - Phil Chokeword

In The Red Records)

2. Psyched To Die – Conditioned To Fail (From the “Year 1” CD on

You should totally drop him an email at rich_smith@live.co.uk if you’re on the south coast and want to record.

14. Cynics – In The Valley (From the split tape with Wegrowbeards –
Cynics myspace)

Notes:
2. I asked the bands (Bloody Gears, Wegrowbeards, Cynics, Social Circkle), the labels (In The Red, Dirtnap, No Idea, Recess) or Cam at Southern Lovin’ (Nobunny) if it was OK to podcast their songs and they were cool with it. I think one of the great things about the Internet is that it’s really easy to get in contact with people whose music you dig and I'd like to take time to thank them for allowing me to play their songs. Cheers!

Ten Songs Podcast #14

February and it’s still fucking cold, although at least the snows gone and I finally got paid. January’s a long month innit. Anyhow, this show features the second of our studio live sets. Rich Smith was kind enough to record a studio set from the Southampton hardcore band Defier for me that’ll appeal to anyone who likes modern hardcore bands like Have Heart and Blacklisted. You can hear the four tracks from that session for the first time ever on this show. Thanks to Rich and Defier for making this happen and keeping the ball rolling with what is going to be a regular part of the podcast. As well as this, I picked up the “Toronto’s Burning” compilation LP on Schizophrenic Records so this shows fairly heavy on the TOHC. Enjoy. - Phil Chokeword
